Cyprus, France and the Netherlands: culture is not just an elitist pleasure.

Wednesday, 8th of February |  12:00 – 12:45

Cyprus, France and the Netherlands: culture is not just an elitist pleasure

Born and raised in the Turkish part of Cyprus, Meltem Burak (CYP) heard people discussing the ‘Cyprus Conflict’ from an early age onwards. Her interest in the Cyprus Conflict was really aroused in 2006, when she was selected for the Fulbright Bi-communal Youth Camp in the USA. She is currently a European Studies student in Maastricht, just back from an exchange period in Lyon, with a wider perspective of cultural differences now.

Cyprus, France and the Netherlands: culture is not just an elitist pleasure
Cyprus is an island of contradictions, but what is the full truth? What do we actually know about this island, which is a mosaic of sun, bread, dance, water, lemons, olives, jasmines and side streets? Dutch society is quite different, and the French way of life different still. The concept of culture in these societies is different. Especially among young people in the Netherlands culture may be seen rather as a pleasure for the elite or intellectuals than something to innovate the society. The aim of this fun but challenging presentation is to show the necessity of culture for contemporary society.
